Medical Society of Milwaukee Past President's Honored at Wisconsin Medical

Among the many activities that occurred during the Wisconsin Medical Society's (WMS) Annual Meeting in Madison April 2-3, were the recognition of two Medical Society of Milwaukee Past Presidents - George M. Lange, MD, who received the 2016 WMS Director's Award, and Clarence Chou, MD, who received the WMS Presidential Citation honor.

The Director's Award was established in 1928 and is granted only on occasion to those outstanding physicians who have served the medical profession with integrity and honor and who have made numerous and substantial contributions to the profession and the community. Board certified in internal medicine and geriatrics, Dr. Lange has been active in WMS, both as a member and as a leader, for more than 35 years. As the WMS president from 2011 to 2012, he used his platform as president to focus on the importance of advance care planning. Dr. Lange was president of the Medical Society of Milwaukee County in 2000 and remains a current member.

WMS Board of Directors Chair Molli Rolli, MD, said the launch of the WMS Honoring Choices Wisconsin program in 2012-and subsequent growth of advance care planning in Wisconsin-would not have been possible without Dr. Lange's tenacity and vision.

"From medical students to colleagues at the American Medical Association, and peers in Wisconsin and other states, he was-and continues to be-a tireless champion for advance care planning, and we are indebted to him for increasing awareness of this very important issue," said Dr. Rolli.

In addition to his advocacy involving advance care planning and his long history of involvement and leadership, Dr. Lange also was recognized for being "a tremendous advocate for his patients and our profession in other areas," according to Dr. Rolli.

Presidential Citations

Outgoing WMS President Jerry Halverson, MD, DFAPA, recognized Dr. Chou with a Presidential Citation.

A longtime WMS member and leader, Dr. Chou was honored for his numerous contributions to organized medicine as well as his commitment to the next generation of physicians. Dr. Chou was President of the Medical Society of Milwaukee County in 2011 and remains a member today.

"I first met Dr. Chou when I was a psychiatry resident at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), and it's been a real privilege to get to know him over the years as a mentor, colleague and friend," said Dr. Halverson, adding, "He has helped guide our (the Society's) good work in so many ways for such an extended period of time."

Board certified in general psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry, Dr. Chou is a staff psychiatrist with the Milwaukee County Behavioral Health Division.

He is also an associate clinical professor of psychiatry and behavioral medicine at MCW, and has held numerous leadership positions at the state and national levels, including serving as Society president and both chair and vice chair of the board of directors.

Congratulations to both Dr. Lange and Dr. Chou for their outstanding contributions to ensuring quality health care for our patients and their families!
