MSMC Physicians Provide Expertise on Senator Johnson Opiate Panel

The Medical Society of Milwaukee County (MSMC) was pleased to participate in a Roundtable Discussion on September 1 at MATC-Milwaukee to implement the Promoting Responsible Opioid Prescribing (PROP) Act presented by Senator Ron Johnson (R-Wis), chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.  The PROP Act prohibits pain management questions on patient surveys from being factored into Medicare reimbursement calculations.

Medical Society of Milwaukee members Brian Peterson, MD, MSMC President, and Michael McNett, MD, Pain management physician and member of the Wisconsin Medical Society's Opioid Task Force, were two of the distinguished medical experts on the panel.

Opening the Roundtable was Attorney General Brad Schimel who stated, “Everywhere you look you see the damage that this epidemic is doing to our communities.  I’m very proud of the medical community for their ideas and work on this issue. “Many of these ideas are now being implemented by Senator Johnson.”

Timothy Westlake, MD, Vice Chairman, State of Wisconsin Medical Examining Board, and chairman, Controlled Substance Committee stated: “The pain scale really has changed the culture and allowed this prescriptive practice. I’d like to applaud Senator Johnson on the Prop Act in order to solve this problem.”

According to Brian Peterson, MD, while his office is one of the “last responders” the opioid epidemic “has hit our offices as much as anyone.”  He stated that of all the autopsies he performs in a single year one-quarter is deaths from overdose.

Michael McNett, MD added: “We need to really look at this and ask ourselves why are we even doing this.  Pain control is a right, opiates are not.”
In conjunction with the roundtable, Sen. Johnson released a report on his work on the opioid epidemic in Wisconsin and across the country, as well as on his work in addressing our unsecure borders and their relationship to America’s insatiable demand for drugs.

Also on the panel were:  Sen. Cory Gardner (R-Colo.); Steven K. Kulick, MD, Chief Medical Officer, ProHealth Care (Oconomowoc Memorial Hospital and Waukesha Memorial Hospital) Medical Director, ProHealth Solutions; Daniel Zomchek, Director, Milwaukee VA Medical Center; and, Paul Raddatz, Father of Ali Mari Raddatz who passed away from an overdose.
