Barb Hummel, MD named to AMA Senior Physicians Group Governing Council

Barb hummel Medical Society of Milwaukee County past president and Wisconsin Medical Society Board Vice Chair Barbara Hummel, MD, has been appointed to a three-year term on the AMA's Senior Physicians Group Governing Council. The council meets at the AMA annual and interim meetings and plays an important role in supporting senior physicians.

Doctor Hummel is a family physician in private practice in West Allis. She has been a member of the Society's Board of Directors since 2007, is an alternate delegate to the AMA and is a past president of the Medical Society of Milwaukee County.

Milwaukee Area Physicians Elected to State Leadership

The Wisconsin Medical Society’s House of Delegates confirmed the elections of the following physicians and medical student to leadership positions at its annual meeting in Madison April 20-21.

  • Barbra Hummel, MD, a family physician in private practice in West Allis, was elected to a one year term as Vice Chair of the Board of the Wisconsin Medical Society.
  • Michael W. Lischak, MD, an occupational medicine specialist at Gateway Medical Clinic in West Allis, was re-elected to a three-year term on the Board of Directors.
  • George Chip Morris, MD, medical director of the Regional Epilepsy Center at Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center, was re-elected to a three-year term on the Board of Directors.
  • Philip Redlich, MD, PhD, associate dean for curriculum and professor of surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, was re-elected to a one-year term as the Board’s Medical Schools Section representative.
  • Senthil Rathinavelu a student at the Medical College of Wisconsin, was elected to a one-year term, representing for the Medical Student Section.
  • Clarence P. Chou, MD, a psychiatrist in the Behavioral Health Division of Milwaukee County’s Department of Health and Human Services, and an associate clinical professor at the Medical College of Wisconsin, was re-elected to a two-year term as a delegate to the American Medical Association.


The Wisconsin Medical Society’s Board of Directors includes physicians from across Wisconsin as well as a student representative from each of the two medical schools in the state. With nearly 12,500 members dedicated to the best interests of their patients, the Wisconsin Medical Society is the largest association of medical doctors in the state and a trusted source for health policy leadership since 1841.

MSMC Student Members Honored

Prestigious Houghton Award presented to MCW student

Medical student Erin Preloger, a student at the Medical College of Wisconsin, was one of two students honored with the 2012 Houghton Award. Each recipient receives a $1,000 check in addition to the award. The Houghton Award was established by Doctors John H. and William J. Houghton in the 1960s to honor medical students who show promise for becoming what the brothers referred to as “complete physicians” – those who excelled in their knowledge of both the socioeconomic and scientific issues related to medicine.

MCW student receives WMS Presidential Scholar Award

At the WMS Annual Meeting in April, Senthil Rathinavelu received the 2012 Presidential Scholar Award, which recognizes a medical student entering his or her fourth year who has exemplified the attributes, skills and desire to become a leader in the medical profession in Wisconsin. A student at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Rathinavelu will receive a $3,000 scholarship to assist with his educational expenses. In addition to his academic excellence, Rathinavelu has been an active member of the Wisconsin Medical Society, the American Medical Association and the Medical Society of Milwaukee County. He also volunteers with the Saturday Clinic for the Uninsured, the Big Sibling Mentor Program and other organizations.

Summer Fellowships awarded to four MCW students

Thanks to the support of the Foundation’s IV League members and county medical societies, the Foundation has sponsored four medical  student summer fellowship projects this year. Foundation fellowships provide medical students the opportunity to increase their knowledge of how community organizations and/or government entities work with the medical profession to address health issues in Wisconsin.
Each of the following medical students will receive a stipend of up to $3,500 and experiences that will help shape his/her career:

  • Matthew Parker, Medical College of Wisconsin
    Project: Assessment of Parental Knowledge, Attitudes and Beliefs Before and After Infant Safety Education in the NICU
    Mentor: Angela Rabbit, DO

  • Kristin Roensch, Medical College of Wisconsin
    Project: Reducing Obesity
    Mentor: John Meurer, MD, MBA

  • Kaitlyn Schneck, Medical College of Wisconsin
    Project:
    Effects of Laundering Practices on the Acquisition of Clostridium Difficile in Hospitals and Long-Term Care Facilities
    Mentor:
    Timothy McAvoy, MD

  • Brian Willenbring, Medical College of Wisconsin
    Project:
    Defining How to Identify Who Needs a Trauma Center
    Mentor:
    Ronald Pirrallo, MD, MHSA, FACEP
